Our weather is starting to warm up which makes me so happy! With spring in the air you can bet I’ve started to shift my closet back to warm weather wear. In fact this past week I did a full closet sweep, and I’m happy to report my Capsule Wardrobe – Spring & Summer – is now ready for action!
(Before I jump into all things fashion I want to mention you’ll want to check out this entire post, there is a giveaway today!!!)
Last year I made the transition to two six-month capsule wardrobes. I shared (in full detail) how I created my Spring & Summer Capsule Wardrobe and my Fall & Winter Capsule Wardrobe. (If you are not familiar with the whole concept of “capsule wardrobes” those two posts will bring you up to speed.)
Well…this month officially marks a year since my wardrobe transformation. It’s been a fantastic fit for me, no pun intended.
When I set out to create a capsule wardrobe I began by determining my three wardrobe goals:
Goal #1 – Pare down my clothes so my closet reflects the following (I shared more about these three rules over HERE):
- Only clothes I love (and wear).
- Tops and bottoms that GO together.
- Overall less clothes, but more outfit options, with quality pieces.
Goal #2 – Create two six-month capsule wardrobes (Spring & Sumer / Fall & Winter), this is what works for my style, life, and location.
Goal #3 – My capsule wardrobes would not include: workout clothes, jewelry, accessories, purses, swimsuits, pajamas/loungewear, or underwear.
After following the two six-month seasonal capsule wardrobes for a full year I am hooked! I have fine-tuned things and feel I have a very good plan which works really well for me.
My two seasonal capsule wardrobes have between 55-65 pieces on average, with some overlap. And remember I’m not including other categories, such as workout or loungewear.
Scaling back your closet and taking a more intentional approach to shopping and styling, will save you time and money. My hope is you will be inspired to take your clothing organization to the next level. A level which will most likely look like less clothes in your closet, yet many MORE outfit options. Organizing a capsule wardrobe(s) will help you avoid decision overload.
Need help getting started? I’ve compiled my seven basic principles to help get you going!
The 7 Principles of a Capsule Wardrobe
No. 1 – Life
Evaluate your style, lifestyle, and location.
No. 2 – Basic
Invest in quality classic (neutral) pieces.
No. 3 – Comfort
Dress for form and function, before fashion.
No. 4 – Turnover
Schedule a periodic inventory (decluttering) of your wardrobe.
No. 5 – Outfits
Every piece of clothing in your closet should have a partner.
No. 6 – Plan
Shop for new clothing (only) off of a specific list.
No. 7 – Bling
Accessories are your number one accessory.
Last but not least, to help inspire your organizing efforts even more, I’m giving away one of my favorite organizing products, an over the door hanging organizer.
