You may not believe what I’m going to tell you today.
Are you ready? You need to be splurging!
Maybe not when it comes to adding more “stuff” to your home and life, but you should be splurging when it comes to your favorite foods.
You are liking this so far, aren’t you?
I’m serious though. With an intentional strategy you can continue to eat your favorite foods and even lose weight. In fact, saying no to your favorite foods, is almost a guarantee that you’ll reach for them again, sooner and faster.
Consider me exhibit “A,” the minute I tell myself that I’m going to give up ice cream, then I just want ice cream, and more of it! Human nature right?
5 Strategies for Smart Splurging
Be prepared. Yes, I’m saying that you should plan to indulge. If you have an upcoming celebration that will have some of your favorite foods, manage what you eat before and after the event so you can more easily enjoy the celebration (and the food.)
Be sweet or salty. Choose one or the other. When you mix the two together it can leave you feeling less satisfied and you’ll usually end up eating more of both.
Be protective. Don’t keep your temptation foods stocked at home or work. Rather, load up your home and work with healthy options. If you have trigger foods too accessible you create an overly tempting environment. (Not that I would know anything about this…)
Be selective. When you want to order that gigantic Reuben sandwich, opt for a side salad instead of the fries. Or only eat half of the sandwich and take the other half home. Don’t over do it when you are splurging, it’s OK to be picky with how much you actually eat. Having left overs is always a nice treat!
Be present. This idea seems to keep popping up in my life, because you know why? It’s really important! When you are intentional with your meal and snack times you can better use discernment. You will be able to enjoy and savor your favorite snack or food even more, without eating more.
So yes, share some popcorn at the movies, have a slice of pizza, or celebrate with a big piece of Birthday cake! But….use some strategy. Strategy can make all of the difference.
