Here are my five tips to an organized car and a little “how to” on how to keep it working for you. (Thanks Dr. Phil, I always think of you when I hear – “How’s that working for you?”)
TIP #1 – Empty It
Take everything out that doesn’t belong, every single time that you get home, and most importantly any garbage. The less you keep in your car, the less you have to organize.
And because…you don’t want things to start to looking this way…
Guess what?!? This part of my car had looked this exact same way for almost three years. (Somebody please call the car organizational police.) It was an out of sight out of mind kind of problem.
For some reason, I could not be bothered to take the five minutes necessary to just clean it out. So….when I set out to work on this post, I told myself that I would also need to deal with this ugly eye sore, once and for all!
LOOK what five minutes did!!! This is proof that organizing can be quick and transformational. (What I’m not showing you is the stacks that were piled up outside of the car from what I took out of this spot, but trust me, I did take care of those things too!)
TIP #2 – Plan for Emergencies
In my Car Trunk Organization post I walked you through my First Aid set up. Having first aid supplies with you can be a real blessing, especially when you are faced with an unfortunate situation.
TIP #3 – Glove Box Essentials
Car manual, car insurance information, paper, pen, ice scraper and tire thingy, should all be in your glove box, and if you wear gloves you can put them in here too.
*Fun fact – in Portugal you have to carry a yellow safety vest with you at all times, because if you get into a car accident you are required to wear the vest, place your safety cones (also required) around your accident scene and then wait for the police. (I am SO thankful I have not had to deal with this situation.)
TIP #4 – Store Necessities
Keep all other essentials within arms reach. I make sure that I keep plastic bags tucked in my car for any garbage and/or accidents and I also use the tiny pockets to hold things like lotion, wipes and umbrellas.
TIP #5 – Keep it Clean!
Rather you clean your car yourself or you get it cleaned for you, make this a monthly priority. When you pull out the vacuum or get the exterior washed, it just makes the whole car sparkle again. It also helps you to keep on top of the “stuff” you keep in your car because you have to tidy in order to clean. 🙂
There you have it…five simple steps to keep your car humming along. We’ll call it Car Organization 101. Did you pass?
Happy safe and organized driving.
