This is the never-ending question isn’t it?
I’m here to help!
I was asked the question in an interview, what is one fit and healthy tip that you would want to pass on? And, this was my answer – drink water! (Start with 50 ounces per day.) I really believe that water can make such a difference in your overall health, and especially if you are avoiding other non-healthy drink options.
WHY WATER?
Water makes up between 50-65% of your body (it varies according to your age and gender) and your body just plain needs it. Thankfully you do take in water from lots of the different foods that you eat, but that doesn’t make up for the fact that you still need to drink water too! Water helps to flush out your toxins and gets rid of waste. It helps to improve your complexion and maintains healthy digestion. Water can also help with weight loss by raising your metabolism and helping to reduce hunger and boost your energy levels.
HOW MUCH & HOW OFTEN?
This is a complicated one. You need to listen to your body and drink (water) when you are thirsty. (Although when you start to feel thirsty you are probably already experiencing some dehydration.) If your urine is not light-colored than you are probably not drinking enough. Your body can be your best guide. Of course lifestyle and exercise can affect your hydration needs as well. A general recommendation is that you drink eight ounces, eight times a day.
There are conflicting opinions about the effects of caffeine and alcohol and how they affect your overall water intake. Again to keep it simple, I would suggest that you limit how much caffeine and alcohol you consume. As moderation is the key to good health.
TIPS & TRICKS
Make water your primary drink of choice and be sure to plan ahead! Measure with a pitcher or pre-filled water bottles. Carry your water with you – at all times – and limit other beverages to only once or twice per day. If you create a habit of choosing water and carrying your water along with you, it really won’t be that hard to get your eight glasses in a day!
