If you are like me, you probably love technology.
My iphone, ipad, and macbook are three of my favorite things!
While many of these devices can help me to save time, I have also realized that they can become big time thieves also. There has been many a time that I have sat down to check just one email, and 30 minutes later I am still on the computer surfing the web, checking facebook, shopping…you name it.
I am challenging myself to use my screen time (specifically phone and computer) for productive reasons and not unproductive. I like to use the word intentional, because it doesn’t mean that you don’t use these great tools, but instead, that you are purposeful with how and when you use them.
How to be Intentional with your Computer/Phone Time:
- Start by logging how much time you spend actually checking your screen(s) for a few days, awareness is always a good first step! You may have more or less to adjust than you realize.
- Next, establish boundaries on when and how often you will check your screens, designate times to respond to emails, comment on blogs, or manage your banking.
- Limit how much time you spend in front of the screen, utilizing timers if necessary, again you might be surprised how quickly 15 minutes goes by.
- Streamline how many social media sites you check on and post on – less is more!
- Organize what regular sites you visit, (news, blogs, etc.) and check daily via bookmarks.
- Try to avoid just logging on to log on, always ask yourself, what is my intent right now?
- Turn off the ringers and/or notifications as necessary to build in time outs. 🙂
- Put people and live conversations at a higher priority than interfacing with the www.
