Last week I had lunch with a friend. We have this little weekly tradition where we meet at the mall. We have lunch at our favorite salad place, we catch up, and then we get our shop on. It is really fun and something I look forward to each week.
We each have three kids that are similar ages. I was venting to her about how some of the picky eaters in my house were running me ragged at breakfast time. She suggested that I make a menu for the week, for example, Waffle Wednesday, French Toast Friday…just like I do for a lot of my dinner planning. I had done this before with breakfast time and realized through her encouragement that it was time to bring it back – along with a time out stool for any complainers.
The Problem:
My kids are supposed to be making their own breakfast each morning, which was only partially working. I would have comments like I’m not hungry, or one child wanting the same unhealthy meal every day. Too much complaining and not enough healthy eating was happening. It was time for an intervention!
The Solution:
In an attempt to get our mornings more streamlined, it was time to have a meeting with my kiddos. I sat down with them and we came up with a weekly Breakfast Schedule. I wanted their buy in and I wanted to cover some ground rules. Here is what we came up with…
Rules
Breakfast will be served @7:30 by moi.
Time Outs will be given for any complaining.
Our motto will be – you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit!
Weekly Menu
- Monday – Oatmeal & Fruit
- Tuesday – Toast/Bagels & Fruit
- Wednesday – Waffles & Smoothies
- Thursday – Eggs & Fruit
- Friday – Cold Cereal & Fruit
The Results:
Today marks day one – I made oatmeal and served it with sliced apples. There was only one time out.
*KISS – A schedule can turn chaos into calm.
