Yesterday I had a pool girl – not a pool boy, mind you – come by to ‘teach’ me how to clean and maintain the pool. Our idea was that if we paid someone to show us how to manage this new responsibility then my hubby could do it all on his own. We could save some money and my hubby could even pick up a new hobby!
Well…at first I was busy asking her questions, jotting down notes, in my mind thinking not so bad, maybe just a wee bit time-consuming (for him). But…then we had to go to this little room, you might call it a pool tool shed, I don’t know. Anyhow there are a lot of things in this said room. Valves, dials, timers, a pump with sand in it, a special tool to access the filter…I couldn’t write fast enough. I’m the girl who has never changed a vacuum belt. She tried to show me how to assemble the pool vacuum and I was pretty sure I could never retain even the first step.
It was at that exact moment that I said to myself – she is hired – she didn’t know it yet, but I for sure did. There was NO way my hubby could keep up with this said task, and have any enjoyment from it. (I had no idea you had to seriously vacuum a pool?) Not that he wouldn’t want to, but the time and knowledge was way beyond both of our skill sets with no formal training in pool maintenance, whatsoever!
So the valuable lesson I learned today was – there is a time to call upon the so-called expert. I don’t want to become an expert in pool maintenance and as much as my hubby may think he does, after my mini lesson today, (that turned me into a deer in the headlights) I quickly realized he wouldn’t probably end up enjoying it and his time could be better spent actually playing with our kids in the pool.
Let’s face it, we can’t do everything! I want to perfect my tan while laying on an air mattress in the pool and not be worried that I didn’t get to the vacuuming of the pool because my hubby is away on business.
My encouragement for you today, is to ask yourself, what are you holding onto that you need to delegate to someone else? It doesn’t have to be something that you have to pay someone to do, but really what is in your grip that you might need to let go of so you can focus on something more important or more valuable?
