We are still old school here at the Tyree house. We actually still use our Sony Video Recorder we bought when we had our first born. I have a system of organizing the video tapes, and then transferring them (and editing) them onto DVDs. About once a year I get around to updating and transferring everything.
THANKFULLY technology continues to improve, but that doesn’t always simplify things!
Since we all have different systems I am going to be general in my tips below.
Managing Memories – Home Videos
1-Try to minimize how many devices you actually record with.
I primarily use our Sony video recorder, even though it is totally old school, it allows me to keep one system organized. We do have random videos on the ipad or desktop, but not really memorable occasions, just the kids goofing off! If I get more savvy – with my technology I will try and make a DVD of these highlights as well.
2-Schedule to regularly transfer and/or organize all clips.
Frequency will depend on how much video you record. I only have to do this about once a year, we just don’t take as much video as the kids are getting older.
3-Edit as you transfer (if an option.)
You probably don’t really want to watch an entire preschool performance over again in ten years. So, try to minimize what you record AND what you transfer over. Think highlights, and most memorable.
4-Make an annual event to sit down and watch your Home Movies as a Family.
What is the point of recording things if we rarely set up a time to watch them together? When we have taken the time, we laugh together as a family at all of the great memories.
Happy Organizing!!!
