We have been in our current home for over eight years, and one of my favorite spaces, is our Master Bedroom Closet. I love that we are able to fit all of our clothes in here, we can go in and shut the door if we want – not that we do, and there is a laundry chute drop in the closet! The only downside is that I am pretty sure my hubby has more clothes, and shoes than me.
I will admit right here, and right now that he is my personal shopper. I tend to gravitate towards anything in the gray or black category, white is good too. To me neutrals, or as – I call them neuts – are just so easy to match….because they match with everything….I am a safety girl, neutrals first!
I’ll break it down some more for you…Top Left – We will start with my side, and yes there are some colors in there…I hang my clothes by like items. Short sleeve casual, long sleeve casual, tank tops, short sleeve dressy, long sleeve dressy, coats, jackets, vests etc… Then the top shelf holds my shorts and sweaters. The bins store 1) hats, 2) lingerie, 3) purses, and 4) swimsuits. I found these bins at Walmart, and I love how they tie in the colors with our room and bath. The lower shelf is a great spot where my hubby tucks away all of his dress shoes.
Bottom Left – My casual pants and jeans hang here, and then I have one drawer set, for socks, undies, pjs, and all my workout gear. Far bottom left holds all my hubby’s casual pants-notice he has clothes on my side… 🙂
Back Wall – I hang my dress pants, skirts, and dresses on the left. Love the hanging shoe system, also from Walmart (and it matches – I am a sucker for things that match together). We keep all of our casual shoes in the garage in a shoe system there and then our dressier shoes are in our closet (in other words the ones we don’t wear as much.) The laundry baskets are stored here when empty and wait for Monday – Laundry Duty! The access to the laundry chute is right here as well, love it! It goes directly to my awesome little mudroom. We store a few random items here, my roller and a space heater. My hubby hangs his light coats here and the top shelf holds sweats and sweatshirts for us both. I have learned it is important to not stack too high with folded items. My short holiday season at the Gap taught me how to fold properly!
He hangs items by like items as well, dress shirts and pants, workout shirts, short sleeve and then long sleeve shirts. His top shelf is all folded clothes, sweaters, pj bottoms, and shorts.
Hubby keeps all of his hats in a large bin on the floor for easy access. He has two sets of drawers for all of his folding and loose items. I love the lids on top of the drawer systems for a more finished look. I bought the drawer systems at Lowes, but I think you can find better prices at Ikea. (The stool is used for hair cuts in the bathroom.)
Simple system for ties!
Simple system for belts and any running ribbons…
Simple Tips: Master Bedroom Closet Organization
- Use the same color and/or style of hangers for a consistent look
- Hang your clothing in like styles (tank tops, skirts, pants…)
- Utilize your high storage for items accessed less frequently
- Commit to organizing as you put away your laundry away each week
- Purge your clothing often and keep a sack in your closet for old items to give away
- Be sure to have a hamper or basket for dirty clothes
- Try to maintain the rule of one in one out…
*KISS – Don’t keep things you are not wearing, they are just taking up space.
