This week’s goal was to clean and organize the dining room, thanks to A Bowl Full of Lemons. I love being challenged by someone else to continue to tackle my home organization and cleaning. It also helped because my children had overtaken the dining room as a playroom for the past few weeks. While I loved all of the creative play that was happening, I was missing my dining room.
We have created this room to be more of a multiple purpose room. It is a place where we eat with others, usually company (family and friends), it becomes a work and study space for me and my hubby, and it is also my sewing room.
One of my favorite things about the room is the long narrow table that my dad built. My mom offered it to me years ago and I was so excited to get to bring it into our home. It has additional leafs and can seat up to 12 people. We updated the space with new lighting, plantation shutters, curtains, and a deep red paint color to contrast with the white woodwork.
We recently also updated with cushioned chairs and slip covers. I love that we can change them out as we want and they are super comfy to sit on without taking up too much space. (These were both purchased from Cost Plus.)
We have slowly added Plantation Shutters to most of our windows throughout our home, I love the look of them. We also softened the room with curtains and rods from Pottery Barn. Thanks to my friend Beth who found these curtains for me, I would have looked right past them!
When a neighbor offers you a hutch you say yes! It fits perfectly in the room and gives us some extra storage too. I recently was going to replace the nobs, and threw away the old ones before checking the new ones, whoops! Now I have no knobs since the new ones did not work. I am going to get around to this someday… I would actually like to do an overhaul on this piece, when the time allows…
Here is where you will discover my multipurpose system – meet my sewing space.
These are my future projects, all the fabrics that need to be sewn. I have made a rule that I can not buy more fabric unless it will fit in this drawer! It is so easy to keep buying fabric but not actually make the time to sew it. (At least for me, I am sure no one can relate right?)
I found drawer trays that fit perfectly and they work wonderfully to organize all of my sewing supplies.
One cupboard holds my sewing machine, cover, and a few miscellaneous items.
The other cupboard stores my patterns, serger, and interfacing. The beauty is that when I want to sew I have a great sized table to work on and I can quickly set up all of my stuff.
Who says your dining room has to be just for dining? Thanks to my mom who gave me the idea to expand the purpose in this room. She is also going to help me stain the table soon too. We are thinking of going darker, what do you think?
*KISS – To make the most of your living spaces, consider how you could multi-purpose different rooms to increase their functionality.
